Headshot of Mary Leach Artist

I studied Art, Design and Marketing at degree level, graduating in 1991 where I focused on illustration and graphics. The strong graphics and design  influence is still very evident in my current artworks.

I work mostly from photographs. They are usually images that I have taken on walks around London or on my travels. I am always on the lookout for interesting, colourful scenes that I can create a strong composition to work with. I love bold shapes and vibrant colours.

I have settled mostly on acrylic as my medium of choice (although I do also enjoy drawing with inks and pencil). I never know where the colours and shapes in the painting will take me, so using acrylic paint, which is fast drying, enables all the changes to take place quickly. Many frustrating changes and ‘happy accidents’ occur along the way.

I also produce limited-edition prints, which makes my work accessible to a wider audience. The reproduced artwork is printed on high quality giclée fine art paper, which can replicate the colours brilliantly and gives a rich textured finish. I have also reproduced work on high quality printed canvas which some people prefer. If there is a particular image you would like to have as a print, it is always worth asking as I have a catalogue of scanned images that could potentially be reproduced. I would recommend not enlarging the image from the size of the original however, as it loses the integrity of the painting.

I have work on permanent display at Skylark Galleries, Gabriel’s Wharf, South Bank, London, where I also have an online presence @Skylarkgalleries. The group recently had a successful exhibition at the Oxo Gallery on the South Bank which we hope to repeat next year.
